What printer do professional photographers use?

Which way do you use to print your pictures?

  • I asked this question yesterday and only got one response. Do you send them to a printing service to do them for you? Or do you have a high quality printer that is calibrated and print them out yourself? I am going to be opening a studio soon and I am curious how other photographers do it. Ink is pricey so I am not sure if I will go that route or send the pictures out to be printed since we have nowhere in this town that does this service. I like the idea of people having their photos right there but would it be worth the cost? Which way do you think is better? Which do you use?

  • Answer:

Send out only. Not only is the cost of ink and paper very high, the quality is just not the same when you print at home. Think about it. Lets say you get a really top notch photo printer in the 13 inch size range. It will cost a few hundred dollars, and when all is said and done, it is still an ink jet printer. A pro printing service, such as Mpix uses laser printers costhing as much as a house. These printers are maintained and calibrated by experts. The laser printer exposes true photographic paper. It is not spraying ink on a shiny surface like an ink jet. A pro printing service will also have many options available when it comes to mounting and finishing and even framing and canvas wrapping. Frankly, to me, you are giving people amateur junk if you hand out ink jet prints you make at home. Here is an excellent lab, though there are plenty others: http://www.mpix.com steve
