Install Ubuntu without overwriting the MBR?

Dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10?

  • I want to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. i understand you can use wubi to install it through windows but i would prefer for ubuntu to have its own partion on my drive. But the thing is, ubuntu installs grub boot loader and replaces windows MBR. I do not mind grub, but i do not wish for it to over wright MBR. So is there a way for to do something like wubi does? when i boot i see the windows mbr and i have the option for Windows and Ubuntu, when i select Ubuntu i am preseted with another boot loader that has all the Ubuntu options. IS there a way to do this without screwing up MBR?

  • Answer:

get this software: http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ it says "buy now" but if you go to the bottom of the page it is free for non-commercial use. install it on windows. save your windows mbr - so you can just revert back to your original configuration at any time. Then install ubuntu then in windows configure a new bootloader really just take a look at the options in easyBCD, it's so easy to configure, back up, restore... I love it. EDIT: @the one below. didn't you read the bit about BACKING UP the MBR !!! how can it be too late if you back it up ! ! !

I'm not entirely sure this will work with Ubuntu, but it does work with other distributions. Try this: - Select Advanced/I want to do something else when you go to install Ubuntu - It will ask you where you want the bootloader installed. Select the partition that you installed Ubuntu on. This will prevent it from overwriting the Windows MBR, but I'm not entirely sure Ubuntu gives you the option of where to install the bootloader. You may have to pick another distribution. Hopefully someone will come along that knows whether or not this is an option in Ubuntu. BTW, using BCD is NOT the answer. If you install Ubuntu the regular way, it'll be too late to save your MBR from Windows.
