Are there any chat apps that work with both the Blackberry and the iPhone?

i live in the US and my friend lives in the UK, we both have Blackberrys and we're currently using BBM to talk. But i am going to upgrade to an iPhone soon, so i wanted to find an app that works with BOTH phones so that we can still stay in touch. We've tried Kik, and don't like it. Are there any other apps? Please let me know!

i have an iPhone and my mum has a blackberry so i know a few... social networking apps - facebook chat - whatsapp messenger others are either not really good or they are there on one phone and not the other so i just recommend the above 2
