An economic obstacle to greater use of drip irrigation in the USA?

How long should I run my drip irrigation system?

  • All of the vegetables and flowers that I have say "keep moist dont over water dont underwater" so I decided to install a drip irrigation system. I have read online to use the drip irrigation system for 30 min. to 1 hour every 1-2 days during spring and summer early morning or late afternoon. My question is, is that correct? How long should I let the drip irrigation system run for vegetables and flowers and at what gph and at what pressure. I have an automatic timer. Could someone please help out. Thanks in advanced!!

  • Answer:

After the water has been dripping for a while, get a trowel and dig in the watered area. The soil should be wet for a depth of a good inch or two. Watering just the surface means the plants will never develop good root systems. Getting it too wet can drown the roots from lack of oxygen. Better to water deep twice a week than shallow everyday.
