A Level Options: Classical Civilisation or History of Art?
-
Hey, this only a quick one so please don't leave with out giving your opinion! So I'm just about done with my first year in college (UK) and as most students, I'm dropping one of my AS (Maths) for another AS in second year. I've decided to choose a subject within the Arts and Humanities, since I'm really interested in those kind of topics. Now, I'm stuck with these 2 options and I can't decide because they both sound so good and so interesting! Classical Civilisations - The epic poetry of ancient Roman poets, Homer and Virgil. - Comic drama of ancient Greece and Rome. - Study of 'The Odyssey', where look at the epic wanderings of Greek hero Oddysseus, plus 4 Greek tragedies:Oedipus, Agamemnon, Medea and Pentheus. So basically, much like English Literature (which I will be taking as A2) except with ancient text and stories. I love studying History (also taking as A2) and I plan to take it as an undergrad degree after college before doing a post-grad in Journalism. This is a time in History which I haven't really had much experience in, but I'm dying to know more about it! Ancient heroes and Gods just sounds like so much fun! History of Art - Learn to "read" images of individual artists. - Discover the messages behind painting, sculpture and architecture. - It's like history, literature, philosophy and religion all in one! I've always had a passion for art as well, and although I'm not as good with painting, drawing or sculpting I find i'm quite good at interpreting images as I'm visual learner. It's also recommended for those aspiring journalists and writers. So those are my 2 options, both essay based subjects where I can gain crucial analytical skills. Only difference is, one is more visual whilst the other is based on texts. Now I'd like to hear your opinion. Which subject would you pick? and, of course, why? Thanks so much guys, this really helps :)

Answer:
Like you said, you're a visual learner, and History of Art offers a range of concepts that are visually based. So according to what you said, I'd say History of Art sounds like what you should go for. I personally would choose Classical Civilization as although I am visual, I find that I see things better through my imagination. Then again at the end of the day, you don't really need a rational reason to be passionate about something. So just go with what ultimately feels right (:

Hi. I did Classical Civilisation and for both AS Level and A Level, and haven't looked back since! I also studied History and English Literature for both AS and A Level, and the 3 of them work really well together. Class Civ is a good linkage between the 2. I've gone on to do Archaeology and Anthropology at University, and the skills i learnt in CC are still useful. So, I'd pick Class Civ, because well I did it, alongside those other subjects your doing, and they worked very well together and i found them extremely interesting and rewarding. Anyway, Class Civ really helps you "carpe diem"!!
