What jobs have no evening or weekend hours (for an actress)?
-
I just graduated college (B.A in Music and a minor in Theatre) and want to pursue musical theatre in my town (please don't tell me not to do it, I know the failure rate, but it's what I love to do and what I choose to pursue). As such, I need either a really early morning job, super late at night job, or morning to mid-afternoon job. I figure I can go to about 5 pm every day except Sunday. What types of jobs would be good for actresses (other than being a waitress)? What types of jobs have those kind of hours? I also have pretty much no experience as I've never really had a job before being so focused and busy with college. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Answer:
Hey Broadway, Starbucks always seems to need people for that really early morning shift, and I'm sure lots of fast food places do, too. Supermarkets and 24-hour stores (i.e. Walmart) always need some early morning people, too. But you probably want something better than that, no? A good friend of mine was an actor in Los Angeles, and she got a job that is different than what you're asking about, but maybe this will help. She had some kind of job working in an office, but they didn't care when she came in! She could put in her hours whenever she wanted, and she didn't even have to do a certain amount per week. It was just some kind of boring office work like putting in the numbers on a form (these days it would be computer I'm sure) of the things that got returned because they were defective or whatever. It was a big company, and there were several people who did that job. So, when she had an audition or, yes, got a job, she didn't have to go to work. If it weren't for that, she once told me, she'd never have been able to be a working actor because she never did get enough jobs to support herself, although she was in a number of commercials, stage plays, and had bit parts in movies and TV shows. How do you get a job like that? I have no idea! All I can say is that I've got one myself. But my requires a masters in English. I grade the English Placement test for a two year college. So, there are jobs like that around. But, it is true, they are few and far between. Good luck! I definitely won't tell you not to pursue what you've got your heart set on. I'll bet you're great at it (or you wouldn't care enough to put this question up).
