SSN and driver's license on job app?
-
So, I responded to an ad via email about a potential job. They asked for my resume, so I sent that and then they sent me back a job app. It is a legit store/franchise so far. I looked up their whereabouts, and found that they actually Do seem to be opening up a new store (still a tad dubious because I found that out through a Facebook page they made). However, I'm still a little skeptical because it's through email and all. On the application it asks for my SSN and driver's license #. Because it is through email, and not a secure web page/through the company's site, I feel very wary of putting my SSN on there. I also am a little wary about putting my driver's license # on there (more wary with the previous). I understand that it's needed, but I thought after hire or upon offer. I'm thinking about putting 'available upon job offer" for the SSN. Is that okay? Also, what should I do about my license #? Add. Info: The owners put their names at the end of the email (but then again, I responded to another job offer that was a scam and they did that, so..). This is also for a summer job, if that is at all relevant. BTW, I have been to probably over 30 stores/businesses to look for a job, so I'm not just applying online. It's exhausting and I get no results :[ Sidenote: How in the world am I supposed to gain experience if many jobs will only consider you if you have experience?

Answer:
Don't put your SSN or Driver's License number ON ANYTHING submitted over the web, no matter how legit it looks. Neither of those things is integral to being hired. If you are hired, they will need your SSN to submit your W4 form for wages - and that's it.

Do not give them that information until you actually get hired. Especially if you are worried about the legitimacy of the job offer. That information is not needed for an initial application. I have put my SSN on job applications but only when I have gone in and filled out an application. On an online application I am rarely asked to provide that information, only on an actual business's application like Target or Safeway. You don't want that kind of information in the wrong hands. As for not having experience, you just have to find a business that will take a chance on you. When you apply somewhere, follow up about your application so they know you are actually interested. Either email them, call, or go in and talk to them. That is crucial to getting a job. I got my first one in December and I would only get interviews at places I followed up with. Good luck and keep trying!!
