Any tips on fishing for bass ,blue fish or striped bass on long island Ny ?
-
I've been fishing a few times already with my friends and we babbyyy caught anything but a lousy red robin. We've been to the north shores and south shores on long island with no luck. We usually fish with poppers, diamond jigs and bucktails . The one time we caught that red robin was with menhaden bait ( bunker) . We've actually seen blue fish or bass flopping out of the water one time and they were pretty decent sized but were unable to catch anything . We are beginners and wondering what we are doing wrong . Places we have been to are Robert Moses beach , wading river , and a few other spots on south shore. We get really frustrated because just the other day at Robert Moses someone caught about 30" striped bass in the same waters we were in . We usually go around sunrise about 4-7am. Any tips would greatly be appreciated .

Answer:
They were blitzing, and were after the mackerel,or the menhaden, and they were out too far for you to reach. You could try a Kastmaster or a Crippled Herring and wing them out far into the breaking fish.Generally the stripers will be under the bluefish picking up the scraps from the blitz,The tides have a lot to do with it,you'll need to watch this and fish on the full high tide and slack more than low would be productive, and the approaching darkness,or in the dark is better for stripers than dawn, they'll hit eels at night. If you can try Montauk, you'll do better there.

When you're fishing from shore more often than not you have to scout out the right spots in the surf where the fish are holding. Look for sloughs (ditches near sandbars) and cut outs (breaks in sand bars) or structure (like jetties) which would hold fish. If you're still fishing use a striper/bluefish rig with is one that has a float. That will cut down on the spider crabs and sea robins a bit. no matter what you're doing you're likely going to have to move up and down the beach a bit. Watch the birds when you see the birds working the water you want to be there. Blues will be on top, stripers will be under or down current from them. Pitch your tins in that direction or your poppers/cranks in between. When you can fish a rising tide and a west wind....but you get out when you get out and read the water....
