Culture differences in dating?

  • I'm dating an Asian guy... South Korean to be exact but I'm not Korean. He lived in my country for a few years, so he knows little bit about my culture and language but he still has his Korean ways and he not fluent in the language. Which I wouldn't change it but it's hard to understand him or know what to do because I don't want to something to going to turn him off because cultural differences. Should I correct him on his grammar or spelling or pronunciation when he messes up? He likes correcting me so should I do the same? We haven't kissed yet, how along do they wait to kiss their girlfriend? I know pda is a no no is Korea, so would he carry that idea over here? He likes holding hands and hugs but we haven't kissed. He's already told his mom and close family about me. Is that a good things? since I see other people on Y!A say, "My Korean boyfriend hasn't told his family we're dating. Why?". When it comes to meet his mom or talking to her on phone/online or in person if she come here or I go there, how should I greet her. I want his mom to like me first. Oppa and aegyo. I know girls used this to act cute to get stuff. That's not me and he likes that but I secretly want to call him oppa. How do I used this without turning him off? and any other advices you can give me. And yes I'm learning the language and culture (have been even before we started dating).

  • Answer:

Why not just act natural and do the things that you do in your country? Are they going to adapt to your cultural norms? Is he asking such questions on the internets? I find it stupid that every "western milky white niigga" must act 100% properly in the orient, while the standard isn't the same for non-white foreigners in europe or north america. We don't demand anything else other than speaking a language we both understand (we keep it simple), while they go berserk if we don't eat noodles properly, show too much skin cause of their body-shaming religion or philosophy and if something is in the wrong colour or number combination cause the word death sounds the same as a number. But from all the spontaneous kissing scenes in dramas, I doubt koreans are against kissing. Just french him! :D Tell him you do it right on the second date. I would do it on the first one cause you'll die tomorrow in a car crash by some idiot and thus you'll never get the chance to kiss.
