Swimming: How many lengths to start off with?

I'm 16 years old and want to start swimming, how should I start?

  • I play basketball and occasionally go on runs. I really want to start swimming and maybe go into competetive swimming. I'm not sure how to start because my town doesn't offer anything for beginning swimmers of my age. I just wanted to a find a fun club that was kind of laid back but where I could occasionally do a competition, but my town only has a competetive team. Any ideas of how I should start training on my own so maybe I could join the competetive team?

  • Answer:

ok so first, see if ur town has like a group that isnt that advanced. If not, you should makes sure you know all of the strokes. They are fairly simple and will come easily. I do not think you should worry about it and after you the basics of swimming try to join the team. I am sure that the coach and the team will take you from there. Good Luck!

Does you pool have lap swim for people not on the team? If so, then you can practice. I would suggest, for a beginning level swimmer your age, hour long practices. If you want to get really good fast, I would suggest these drills on these intervals: -10 50 Yards of Butterfly on a Interval of 55 seconds - 6 100 Yards IMs on an Interval of 2 minutes - 8 50 Yards of Freestyle on an Interval of 50 seconds 8 50 yards will work for almost any stroke or drill, and is great for beginning competitive swimmers. You may see fit to adjust the intervals, but I wouldn't suggest anything over 1 minute for 50s for you, unless it is breaststroke. For 25 Yards, I would suggest about 25 seconds, and if you would like to challenge yourself with 200s, then I think 3 minutes, thirty seconds. Good luck!

Youre asking for a little much buddy! But if youre really up for it, just ask someone on the team if they could teach you how to do the strokes. And if they help you have a better chance of getting in. You're already athletic with strongs legs and really good endurance. Get the technique down and you should be good!

Go and talk to the coach. Tell them your situation, and see what they say. Good luck.
