How to apply liquid retin-a?

How to reduce burning while using Retina A for acne?

  • Monday I was perscribed Retina A for at night and clindamycin phosphate topical lotion for in the morning. My dermatologist told me to continue to use my acne regimn ( AcneFree). I bought a sunscreen because she said the Retina A would make my skin sensitive so I use Neutrogena SPF 55 and I use Neutrogena Oil Free Makeup removing wipes. Whenever I use wither the makeup remover or the toner in the Acne Free system, my face (especially around my eyes) burn to the point where I'm in tears and have to put my face in front of a fan for 5 minutes. Can someone help me reduce the burning?

Temporarily stop the Retin A. You can continue the others. You might also temporarily use a non sunscreen moisturizer like the Cetaphil or Cerave since the sunscreen can burn on irritated skin. After a few days when the burning and redness and peeling have stopped, then restart the Retin A. The first time you apply it, leave it on only one hour and wash off with gentle cleanser like the Cetaphil or CeraVe. You probably don't need the toner at all anymore with the medications you have and avoid salicylic acid all together. The next day you apply the Retin A leave it on for two hours, the next day 3 hours and so on. Always apply Retin A sparingly, more is not better. Your goal is to increase the time you leave it on each day until you get back to 6-8 hours. Then just put it on at bedtime and leave til morning.
