Hello, Could I please speak to the manager in charge of hiring... Hello, my name is ________ I am calling to check the status of my application and was wondering if any positions have opened up there... is this good? opinions, advice, etc.

It is tricky, the line between keen and overly keen. How long has it been since you applied and how many applications do you think they have had to go through? If not many applied leave it about a week, if there were quite a few applicants leave it a couple of weeks. Apart from timing the wording seems fine. Even if there isn't anything right now it is certainly a good idea to make sure your name is fresh in their minds.
