Should I start out as a server at a restaurant?

I'm confused about training wages for a server?

  • I have never been a waitress before. I start orientation on Sunday at BJ's restaurant. They said I will be shadowing someone for 4-6 weeks. Do I receive the minimum wage of 7.50-ish (Texas) or the server wage of 2.13? If I receive the server wage, do I keep any tips? I've read various opinions but no straight answer. I don't want the restaurant to take advantage of me since I have no clue how things work. Help! :-)

  • Answer:

Hi! You will be receiving $7.50 during your shadowing because you will not be making tips. Once you're out on the floor on your own, you will then be paid $2 an hour because you'll keep your tips!

This is the sort of thing that should be asked at the interview when the interviewer says "Do you have any questions?" or "Is there anything you want to ask me?" There are countless posts from young people on this site that strongly suggest that applicants remain silent at their interview and barely say a word and certainly don't ask the obvious questions that need to be asked at an interview.

You will be making 7.50 an hour until you start taking tables and earning tips. It's illegal to pay you less without tips. So make sure that you are being paid 750 an hour while training.
