How do I become certified to do medical coding?

What do I have to do to become a Certified Medical Coder?

  • I want to become a certified coding specialist but don't know where to start. I can't find any schools in my area and can't afford to relocate. If I can go through an accredited school when I am through do they give the exam or do I still have to do that myself? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Inquire with your local community college for a short-term program in medical coding and billing. This will help you understand the basics of coding procedures & guidelines and could last anywhere from a few weeks to around 6 months. Once trained, get the AAPC certification by passing the CPC exam. This is a national certification and you can sit for the CPC exam in your own city or state. A comparable certification is CCS-P from AHIMA. Either of these will help you become a certified medical coder.

or medical coding certification there are a couple of organizations that offer them, but I think the most recognized is the AHIMA, website is at http://www.ahima.org/certification/ They offer CCA (Certified Coding Associate), CCS (specialist), etc. These certifications test on all of medical coding, not only radiology. For specifically Radiology Coding, there is this website http://www.rccb.org/ for the Radiology Coding Certification Board for the RCC (radiology certified coder), I don't know how well recognized this credential is. The school, book and exam are not cheap. Better understand the job market before you go into it
