WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN BECOMING A NEONATAL NURSE PRACTITIONER?

Questions about becoming a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner?

  • I am looking into an associates degree that would allow me to become a RN. Once I'm finished with the associates degree do I have to complete a bachelors in nursing to be eligible to get my master's as a nurse practitioner? Any advice would be helpful. I know that the licensing/certifications is different state by state(I'm from IL) but any information would be helpful.

To add onto what Jill said, the programs that allow you to go from ASN to NP usually require a Bachelor's degree in SOMETHING. So while you might be skipping a year or nursing training, you are still in school getting a BA/BS in another field. Jill - Here you are: http://nau.edu/chhs/nursing/ We offer Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), nurse educator, and nurse generalist master's degrees. For admission to the FNP program, we prefer applicants with three to five years of nursing experience. Admission requirements for our graduate programs include, but are not limited to: a bachelor’s degree a minimum 3.0 GPA in all undergraduate nursing coursework an undergraduate descriptive and inferential statistics course from a college or university with a grade of “B” or better completion of an undergraduate course in nursing research with a grade of “B” or better current (less than five years) Health Assessment Course with a grade of “B” or better http://www.son.rochester.edu/programs/apnn/ampnn.html Admission Criteria* Completion of a non-nursing bachelor's degree from an accredited school. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above from the non-nursing bachelor's degree is preferred. Two favorable references, which address academic ability and nursing potential. Typewritten professional statement with career goals. Personal interview with generalist faculty member and specialist faculty member (at the discretion of the specialty program). Applicants must declare a specialty area when applying for admission. Prerequisite courses with a grade of C or above (labs are not required): Anatomy and Physiology Microbiology Nutrition Human Growth & Development (also called Developmental Psychology) Statistics TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language-for International Students) scores >560 for paper-based test, >230 for computer-based test for international students, or >88 for the new “i-based” test. TOEFL is required for international students, but highly recommended for students for whom English is a second language. Generally, yes, you usually must complete your BSN before being accepted into a graduate school NP program. However, there are a handful of schools that offer RN to MSN "bridge" programs which allow you to skip about a year's worth of the BSN level courses. These programs are not very common and are highly competitive for admission however. What Simpson added below is incorrect. Every RN to MSN program I have looked into does not require a BS in another field and you do not earn a BS in another field. You just skip the degree and get your MSN. Not sure what schools they were looking at, but none of the ones I investigated worked that way (and I looked at a lot of programs).

Yes, I think that all states now require that a nurse practitioner have a master's degree and master's degree programs require that each applicant have a BSN.
