How do TV networks find out their ratings?

Do any large TV networks broadcast live online?

  • I haven't been able to find any regular networks, such as ABC, that broadcast their regular programming live. I don't have a TV, usually I check up on "my shows" the next day on sites like Hulu, but I am curious if any of the big networks can be viewed online live. Also, if they don't provide this option, why not? A lot of networks complain that the access to programs online lowers their ratings and live viewership, but some people might watch their live programming, including long commercial breaks, if it was available to stream in real time. Thanks!

  • Answer:

No they don't. They usually put their episodes on their website the day after though They want people to watch their shows when it's airing on the TV Ratings are only detected from the Neilson ratings and while the show is airing live in TV

Not exactly. There is a new service in NYC called Aereo and they are streaming all the network and local channels. So far it's only in New York but if it survives legal challenges it might make it to other cities.
