How much labor would cost to put a engine in a f150 truck?

Would I be able to buy a brand new Ford Ecoboost engine and put it in an older Ford F150 truck?

  • I want a new (new to me, not new as in brand new) truck. I want a Ford F150 crew cab with a 6.5ft bed. The newer ones are way out of my price range, as this is going to be my first car that I bought myself. There are dozens of nice Ford F150's on craigslist with 100k+ miles. I was thinking, could I just buy a new Ecoboost engine and have it installed? That would basically give me a new(ish) truck, and it would run for thousands and thousands more miles without having to replace anything on it. Is this a good idea or no?

It wouldn't be financially feasible. Just a the engine itself runs $8k or so. You'd have to to get a compatible transmission, a new 6R80 6 speed automatic will set you back another $3-4k. You'd need one-off custom motor mounts, a new returnless fuel system, new radiator, new driveshaft(s), new exhaust, a 9.75 inch rear axle, and tons of other stuff. You'd be at around $18k in parts alone, add in labor for all this, and your looking around $23,000 for the project, Add in the cost of the truck to put it in and you're financially better off just buying a new F-150 with the Ecoboost from the factory. I think you're underestimating the difficulty and cost of this project. It's not a good idea IMHO

Depending on how old the truck is (anything older than 2009), I wouldn't do it. With he cost of swapping engines, hardware, mounts, electronics, etc., you would almost be better of getting the new truck. Plus, you would be having to fork out quite a bit of money at one time just to have it installed. In my honest opinion, I wouldn't do it. I've got 133k miles on my 2005 and have never had any problems, but I've been keeping up with regular maintenance as much as I can.

Yes you could but it would not be the best idea considering that the F150 already has a very nice engine. Also replacing an engine costs a lot

In any given vehicle, you can upgrade to an engine newer than that production year. You can not go to an older drive train though.

With a cutting torch and a welder anything is possible. It depends on how much money you want to spend. You would need all the sensors and computer for the new engine. Plus the wiring harnesses and what ever else the Ecoboost requires. If the truck looks decent and looks like it was taken care of, an F-150 should run about 3 to 400,000 miles before any thing major goes wrong. I have a 1981 with th 4.9 six with over 400,000 on it. And it's all original. I have a 92 with over 250,000 and no problems. I have an 03 with over 150,000 on it. not a problem. I bought a new Ecoboost when they first came out and have had nothing but problems.
