What do I need to ride a moped in the UK?

What do I need to do to ride a 50cc moped legally at 16 years old on UK roads?

  • I'm 15 and 16 in 4 months I'm going to be getting a 50cc moped this Christmas but I have no clue on how to get it on the road legally I need to be told every detail that I need to do. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Provisional licence, read the Highway Code, CBT certificate (safety course, usually one day), tax, insurance, MOT (if older than three years old), L-Plates front and rear (not cut down!), and a helmet (done up!), though I'd recommend wearing more than just a helmet!

Yourself: Provisional Driving License (apply online - DVLA website) Compulsory Basic Training (usually a 1 day course costing between £90-£140) Road legal Helmet (gloves, jacket, bottoms, boots if you can) Your Bike: Tax MOT Insurance Front and Rear L plates Tax and MOT may come with the bike. The bike doesn't need an MOT test until it is 3 years old. You can pay for tax online (about £10-£15 for small bikes) You can get an MOT for around £80 at most local garages INSURANCE (bike compare, go compare bikes, get quotes as soon as you know your bikes details, I strongly suggest Third party, Fire and Theft as a minimum in case your bike is stolen, we all think it'll never happen) Good Luck :)

I think Neil covered it but I'll repeat what he said already. First: Provisional License (£50) CBT certificate = compulsory basic training (approx £120 inc bike hire) And then the moped/scooter: For a Japanese scooter, upwards of £650 secondhand. Insurance (the expensive bit! Around £500 for the first year) Tax disc (£15) MOT certificate= required every year if the bike is over 3 years old (£30) Safety gear: You can buy everything secondhand for far less money than new but be very cautious of secondhand helmets; the official advice is that you should never use a secondhand helmet because critical damage may be invisible; but that said, my helmet is secondhand and I'm confident it's okay. Full leathers look a bit silly on a scooter or moped but a café racer style leather jacket with armored jeans will look good; you will also need ankle-high boots. The second most important item to a helmet is gloves; ALWAYS wear gloves, it doesn't matter if they are textile or leather type but you must always wear proper motorcycle gloves when you ride. Total cost of clothing will be around £100 - £200 secondhand. Neil also made a good point about L-plates, the police can be pigs (pun semi-intended) about displaying L-plates and if they see you haven't displayed them perfectly correctly they will use it as an excuse to pull you over and give you a long, boring lecture. If your parents don't know much about motorcycles, get them to start learning now! I hope they realize just how expensive it is to get you started. What you do NOT want is a Chinese scooter/moped or anything that has been molested by a previous teenage owner; Chinese bikes have a reputation for falling apart and there are a lot of 50cc learner bikes that have been mechanically abused by young riders so make sure the bike you get is properly roadworthy, it's better to spend £1000 on a scooter that works than to buy the same one for £500 and have to pay another £1000 repairing it.

- Provisionasl Licence (takes a while to come, so order now if possible) -CBT -Bike Insurance -Bike Tax -Motor bike helmet (only equipment you MUST have) -Bike must be MOT'd -L Plates

Just a note on MOT price, the maximum they can charge for this is £29.65. This max charge is set by VOSA,
