How do I become a police officer?

How can I become a police officer?

  • I am a 15 year old freshman in high school, and my dream is to become a police officer for the NYPD. What can I do to increase my chances of becoming a police officer, or what can I do to help me become a better police officer? There is an Ultimate Athletics in my town, so would it be a good idea to take class there in some sort of martial arts/fighting class? I am also getting a German Shepherd puppy in a week and plan on doing obedience, agility, and schutzhund. Would that increase my chance of getting into the k9 unit after being an officer for several years? Also, I know that police officers have the chance of getting hurt, so is there anything I could do to become more resistant to pain or something like that? I mean at 5"10 and 160lbs, I'm not some tiny girl that can easily be taken down easily, but still. Thanks for the help!

Visit the NYPD's website. They have a lot of information there. Do the best you can in school. Take classes that interest you. Take classes that will improve your communication skills. Take classes that require critical thinking. Take classes that will prepare you for college. Have you considered trying to become a law enforcement explorer. Being an explorer is great for youths that want to become police officers. If you want to become a police officer, you should get a college degree. Get at least a 4 year degree with a high grade point average from a properly accredited school. Consider participating in a couple extracurricular activities. Consider trying to get an internship with a law enforcement agency. Consider doing some regular volunteer work. Volunteering at a local humane society or animal shelter might be a good idea for you. Don't do anything illegal, maintain a good reputation, keep a good driving record, don't get bad credit, practice to improve your observation and memory skills, and become as physically fit as you can. If you would enjoy martial arts, then start taking classes. Best of luck!

Your number one priority should be to stay out of trouble and do the best you can in school, becasue when you go to be hired they will check your background thoroughly and if you have any type of criminal history then you will most likely be disqualified. Do volunteer work and join clubs because that looks really good on your history. You should definitely go to college because it is VERY important, most departments would give someone preference if they had a college degree over someone that ONLY had military experience. Not to mention NYPD REQUIRES that you have an Associates degree OR 2 years of military experience. You should start lifting weights because while 5'10 is a good height, 160lbs is a light weight, you will easily encounter people that are 6'4 and 250 pounds so start a weight lifting program, your high school should have one. Also, doing some type of martial arts or MMA would help you a lot too. Getting your own German Shepherd and training it might help you but will just give you experience in actually being around and training the dog rather than the NYPD saying they want to hire you becasue you raised one. Learning another language is also something you should do, and your school should offer that so I suggest you take one because it will definitely help you get hired and will be very necessary in a city like NY.

K-9 experience is a plus believe it or not. Getting involved with the community is also a great way. Try and make yourself a stable work history and definitely go to college! you have 6 years! Graduate High School and then get your Associates or Bachelors(get a Bachelor). One thing, when you grad high school you will be around 18-19, right? I don't know NY state laws, but I think you can become a unarmed security guard at 18! That's a big plus. You will have everything figured out budd. Good luck, God bless

Contact your local sheriff or police department and see if the y have an explorer program. Also, do good in school. No joke. Especially in writting and english. Take a second language that helps hugely. Also, dont focus in college. Better than that join the army. They have the fastest promotiin schedual which is important to show leadership. Let the millitary give you your schooling while learning to be soldier. Go forto infantry. mp isnt important nor looked at asthe a greatgood thing. Law enforcement want toto train you their way. is is huge too. Most importantly, stay out of trouble and dont ruin your credit score. Good credjt is highly important to le because it shows responsibility and shows you pay your bills and not a flake. Good luck and may you be the best
