What is alimentary canal?

Confusion about what the gut is? and alimentary canal? (repost so please answer)?

  • is it just the stomach? i saw this question that asked, "what happens to proteins in the gut". i talked about occurrences in the stomach, duodenum, and ended at the ileum. i have a bad feeling that is wrong. which organs are included in the gut? and please tell me the organs in the alimentary canal in order. is it mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum then ileum), large intestine (colon then rectum) and finally anus? correct me if im wrong please (: thanks a ton!

  • Answer:

The gut in Biology is the alimentary canal - which is everything from the mouth to the anus. But if somebody talks about their gut, they usually mean their intestines. So the common usage differs from the scientific usage. The sequence of organs is as you describe. Though I wouldn't have thought the larynx was part of the digestive system, it's about voice production.
