How do i become a financial analyst? What is a financial analyst?

Can I become a financial analyst with a psychology degree?

  • I'm going to be a sophomore at University of Michigan and I'm majoring in psychology. One of my coworkers told me that her daughter graduated from U of M a few years ago and studied psych and is now working as a financial analyst. Is it possible to do that? i would really like to do that if I could after undergrad. what other business jobs could I do with a psych degree?

  • Answer:

There are lots of business jobs that you can get with a degree in Psychology. The fact is unless you are going into a highly technical or scientific field the degree major doesn't really matter that much. As your just entering your second year you still have plenty of opportunity to take some business courses to get you "up to speed" in the world of commerce. That being said, you should know that the financial industry has undergone severe disruptions over the last few years. Many of the major players in the world of finance have been laying off thousands worldwide. I just saw a story last week in the WSJ where Bank of America was laying off 2,000 employees in addition to layoffs that were announced earlier this year. Hopefully by the time you graduate the outlook will have improved. Good luck and best wishes for your success.
