How much can I work while On SSI?

Can people work and still be on SSI benefits?

  • Always wondered if it was possible for an individual to be able to work while on SSI. Do they turn off your SSI once you're working? or do they reduce your ssi payments?

  • Answer:

THIS IS NOT A STATE ISSUE---it is a federal benefit. SSI is different from SSDI 1010/month is considered to be gainful employment, but on SSI you can make about 1475/month and not completely loose your benefits---but once they review your case---they may terminate benefits then.... when you work, they don't count the 1st $85....and then they reduce by half the amount you earn for example..if you earn 1085...they will deduct 500 from your SSI..but you still come out ahead for the month

Yes you can work. SSI is a federal benefit and it is the same everywhere. You can earn $85.00 a month free and clear. After that you have to report your income and your next check will be reduced $1.00 for eery $2.00 you earn over $85.00. You can work any number of hours as long as you still have $1.00 left of SSI you are still eligible for Medicaid.

They reduce your payments. For every dollar you make they take away 50 cents so you still come out 50 cents ahead.

Yes you can work and continue to draw as long as you make under the limit without decreasing your benefits . Everything over the limit decreases your payment.... The limit in Alabama is $1000. per month or about 20 hrs per week.
