What is the best way to improve your language skills?

What is the best way for me to improve my English?

  • Hey guys! I am a 17 year old teenager from Mumbai (India), I have just finished my I.B. Diploma which included English SL and I shall be mostly receiving a score of 5 (60%-70%) in English A1 SL. I want to improve my English which includes writing skills, creative skills, critical reading and thinking skills and vocabulary. From my knowledge I know the best possible way to improve my language is by reading more and more books, newspapers, and magazines. But I would further like to know if there any particular type/set of books which can boost my english skills. My interest in reading has risen in the past 2-3 months. I am a SPORTY PERSON and the kind of books which I like to read/have read are: 1) Lance Armstrong - Its not about the bike, my journey back to life 2) Lance Armstrong - Every Second Counts 3) Steven Gerrard - My autobiography 4) Positively False (autobiography of the cyclist Floyd Landis) I want to improve my language so as, I can improve my SAT Critical Reading Section Score (590) + I want the english skills to help me in formulating my COLLEGE ESSAYS. The next books which I plan on reading are another couple of books about cyclists such as Marco Pantani (The life and death of Marco Pantani) and Mark Cavendish (racer boy). I want to know if reading such books do help me in improving my english skills. Also I feel compelled to read the Harry Potter series but I only liked the first book and found the other one boring and therefore gave up. Will reading such books help me? Or reading books by well-known authors such as Jeffery Archer and Christopher Paolini or any others which you may know of Please guys this is a serious question, school/college/university english teachers or american university application reviewers feel free to answer to my question..
