If Certified Nursing Assistant were to be paid more like $20 or more, would you become one?

I was about to enroll myself into one of their short courses here in my home state of NJ. It was only 6 weeks long and become an entry level of nursing position but then I realized the pay sucks. lol. $9-11 per hour? Are you serious??? I could get that same amount as a front desk hotel associate and have less stressful career. Why is that job has the worst pay??? If you know what a CNA does, than the pay is not worth it right? lol

Answer:
They pay doesn't seem like it's worth it, but the pay is so low because the training is minimal and it's not a skilled position. It's a very important field, but with only 6-8 weeks of training/certification and limited responsibilities, the pay is commensurate to the job. Hotel front desk is a fairly high stress job. When you have 20 people waiting in line to check in, screaming babies, barking dogs, 7 different conventions and events, and special guests screaming at you that they booked a super suite and all you have is a standard suite, it can get super stressful.

look into the finances of nursing homes, where many CNAs work. The staffing level is set by the state government. The payment level, since about half of nursing home residents are on Medicaid, is also set by state government. The resulting situation is that nursing homes are perpetually in danger of going broke -- they can't possibly pay CNAs $20 an hour -- they'd be gone.

Because an RN starting out is paid about 24 here. You're going to school for less than 3 months so I wouldn't expect the pay to be a lot. However, hotel front desk associates usually are part-time with little or no benefits whereas CNAs usually can find full-time work after a year of experience with benefits. My friend did manage to get full-time at 16 dollars an hour starting out and within in 8 years he would max out at 24 dollars an hour. It had to do with his background and his boss pulling strings to get him the equivalent of California-region's starting pay. We do not have the Californian cost of living. So with your attitude, please don't become a CNA.
