Trying out for my high school cheerleading team in a week, any tips? What to expect?
-
I did cheer for 2 years when i was little, and I have been dancing for three years. I decided to try out for cheerleading this year. I am very close to all my splits and I can do a cartwheel. haha. I go to a super little school where cheer isn't a big deal and so usually everyone makes it. But this year they got a new coach so I don't know what to expect. Last year they did more dancing than cheer. They had like one or two simple stunts and a few jumps in their routine. But this year I don't know what to expect. And I've never done this before! I just hope I make it because of dance. I think it will help a lot. What should I expect at tryouts? What should I wear? Is there anything I can do to get ready? BTW, I am a sophomore.. going to be a junior next year (when cheer actually takes place) I know they won't ecpect me to know everything the first day I show up.. But I want to be prepared!

Answer:
smile smile smile and stay positive!! you may not have the highest jumps, the best tumbling or the perfect motions but i know from a va state team,we look for the girls with the postive attitudes and motivation to push that extra mile. it doesnt matter how good you are,it matters how well you can work in a team. Good Luck!!!

Make sure your arms are exremely tight when you go, so try standing stright, arms in a V, with your hands in a grip, then you have to keep your balance... so have maybe a family member or friend try to move your arm by ( kind of rough ) tapping hard on your arms, while you try to make them stiff and unmoveable... hope this helps :) Oh and when i tried out ( and i made it ) we all were supposed to wear short shorts ( like sofies ) and a t-shirt

Well since you have a year i suggest some tumbling classes . If you want to cheer and go to college and cheer you will need to learn how to tumble or they probably wont accept you. If you are familiar with tumbling such as back handspring and back tucks, you will be able to get them in no time. I was in tumbling classes and by the second day i was already doing tucks. But in order to make make sure you show a LOTTT of spirit and smile a lot . I would also work on your back and leg flexibility for your splits. But if you don't make the high school cheer squad, I would say maybe try all star cheerleading at a local gym, its better than like sideline cheer, it very fun and active. Its a competitive sport with stunts such as heel stretch and scorpions, tumbling, dance, and jump sequences. Their is also different levels from 1 to 6 but 6 is kind of hard to find. I,m assuming your about 14 or 15, so if you tried all star cheer i would first take tumbling classes and at least learn a tuck because most level 1 teams are about 5 to 8 years old. By the way, a tuck is level 3 team. And you will LOVVVVEEE all star cheer. I hope i helped. p.s. the link below will tell you all the different levels and extra stuff you might need :)
