How do I install Windows XP on a new hard drive?

How can I install a fresh version of windows xp on a machine with a completely wiped hard drive?

There was a problem with an old hard drive in a netbook machine that operated windows xp. I managed to back up all important files. But when I install the new drive I keep getting an error code of 0x0000007b ... The hard drive has absolutely nothing on it. I already performeda quick format on the drive using another computer and a driver reader cable. Im using an external dvd drive (the machine doesn't have one, yes i adjusted the boot settings in bios) Can't seem to get past this error code. What should i check for? Should I load windows a different way? Should I load some basic files before I re-installing

More information is required, what model computer, is it using SATA or ATA for the hard drive. If it's SATA then in the BIOS you will not want to use AHCI unless you have a driver disk available since Windows XP does not include AHCI driver support during install but does give you an option to push F6 during install to wait for you to insert a driver disk. Can you get the computer to boot from the DVD using the windows install disk? Does it begin the installation process or is it going right to the Blue screen error?

The issue with using an external dvd drive is that it likely needs a driver installed on the computer to work. If you have a working usb port on it, it would likely work better if you put the xp files on a flash drive. If you know how to torrent, torrent a version of windows xp onto a flash drive.
