What neighborhoods around LA area are great to raise families in?

My fiance and I are looking to buy a home in the next year or two. We currently live in south orange county California. His job would be in LA though but I don't want him to drive sooooo far to go to work and my job can always be relocated. We were hoping maybe to move to LA area...we dont want to go over 350,000...so dont list places that the medium range is 600,000!!! Can anyone list nearby cities that are safe to live in and its not to far from shopping, eating etc. We would like to be 30-40 miles within LA....

You live in Orange County so you are familiar with the LA/OC area. I can't imagine any place where you can purchase a decent size house (1500+sf) for $350K, in a decent area... that is what housing in Compton costs.

I'd stay in OC, maybe north OC to be closer to LA. Generally better neighborhoods and schools. Could try Fullerton, Brea, Orange, Anaheim, Yorba Linda. I'm not sure about Buena Park and La Habra, not familiar with those areas. Just avoid Santa Ana.
