How much do chefs make?

How much do chefs usually make?

  • My husband wants to be a chef, his passion is cooking and he's really good. It comes natural, too. He doesn't currently have his GED, but is planning on getting it within the next 6 months. At this time, he is a head cook at a fine dining type restaurant and he absolutely LOVES his job. He just wants to make more money, right now he makes $10 and hour plus some overtime. So, my question is if he would get his GED and then go to a trade school, or some sort of online school, what would his likely salary be and about how long would it take him to get there? Thanks

  • Answer:

I worked in restaurants for many years with my brother, and we are both cooks, not chefs,we both make 10 bucks a hour,The head chef makes 25 bucks an hour, but he has been working in the restaurant for over 20 years.. So the longer your husband works at the same restaurant the more money he can get per hour..I don't know if the GED would help him get more money form the first day or not,I guess it depends on what and where your located at..anther thing for every year that passes,he can ask for a $1 more in his pay,but after so many years that will pass I'm sure his boss has a limit in paying people. Just like the head chef at my work the max he gets is $25 per hour and that's after working there for 20 years..

Education is usually a valuable thing. Consider the Culinary Institute of America, the French Culinary Institute (in NYC) or Johnson & Wales. Income possibilities are anywhere from $15 to $25 per hour after graduation.
