Is an audio interface really necessary?

Do I really need an Audio Interface for home recording?

  • The set up I hope to have when I buy the right stuff is: Guitar----Amp-----SM57----USB mixer----Laptop The SM57 is placed over the amps speakers and I was wondering if I could record it from the microphone into the mixer into the laptop. I've read online that an audio interface is necessary for recording but I was just wondering if my set up will work or not?

  • Answer:

An external interface where the digitizing is done within that device, is electrically "quieter" than using an internal sound card that is bathed in a cacophony of signals typically present inside a computer case. You can record using mics in front of speakers, but if your interface has line inputs, you can run the preamp output into those inputs directly. Recording from speakers does give a different sound, of course, so that's up to you to decide what you like best.

Other answers

You should use one, rather than the internal PC audio interface. In your case, the USB in the mixer is the audio interface.
