How to protect our teeth?

How do I protect my teeth after purging?

  • Besides the obvious, which is to stop purging. But I know that after purging, brushing my teeth would result in wearing down my enamel. Any tips? And please, I'm honestly sick of hearing people recommend me to get professional help. Just make it short, simple, and just answer the question.

  • Answer:

Hi Nicole ~~ After you purge, rinse with a solution of baking soda dissolved in water. It's alkaline, so will help act as a buffer for the acidic environment of the mouth. Then spit out. DO NOT brush your teeth for 1 hour after purging, even with the baking soda rinse. See if you can get some plastic trays made - the kind the dentists give for bleaching - and wear them over your teeth when you do purge. This way the acids will not attack the enamel. If you can't get them from a dentist, there are some places (Google it) where you can "make your nightguards/bleaching trays" - which I normally would not recommend, but it is helpful for the bulimic patient who is not in recovery yet. Best of luck!~~
