Can you have big muscles and not be strong?

Strong muscles vs big muscles?

  • Let's say, there are two guys. One hits the gym three times a week and works out pretty intensely. The other one trains every day, but his workouts are shorter. The first one usually get bigger muscles, the second one gets stronger but looks less bulked up. Is there any reason for this? I work out every day, but I don't really strain myself. I've noticed my muscles are way harder than they used to be, even if they're not very huge. I'm only interested in getting stronger so I was wondering if training every day worked best.

  • Answer:

Your premise is incorrect. You can't get much stronger by working out daily. The more well trained muscle becomes the more time it needs to recover. So, the daily trainer will plateau very early on while the 3x trainee will plateau somewhat later. After a few months of proper training, muscle generally needs about a full week to recover and rebuild. Also, strong = bigger. There can be no increase in strength without an increase in size if the other variables (water, fat) are held constant. Good luck and good health!! ♠

For strenght: few reps (2 - 6) but as heavy weight as you can about 4 sets per exercise. For volume: A little more reps (6 - 12) Untill muscle failure. 4+ sets per exercise. But you should train the way you feel works best for you. Remember your muscles need to rest and recover for about 48 hours after a hard workout before you train the same muscles again, else they will break down and get weaker. Therefore you should make a training schedule where you split up muscle groups for different days. Also I would add at least 2 rest days so that your body can recover. If you are unsure how to setup a schedule just google: "Strenght training schedules" there is plenty of great schedule out there. Good luck!

I have been in the same boat I never did get bigger but did get a lot stronger. I think it has to do with your metabolism. My dad was a BIG guy ( 6'4 190 lbs ) and not fat. But me I think I took after my grandfather ( 5' 10 150 lbs ). I tried for years to get bigger and nothing worked. I tried the drinks, workouts all of it. I think some people are just the size they are meant to be. So don't beat yourself up if things don't work. Your not alone!
