• There was this movie that came out recently, and there was a scene we've all seen over the years in some form or the other. The Protagonist had a hard drive that had information that would save her life if she could get to it. She took it to her Hacker Boyfriend, and told him, "It's protected with LEVEL 5 MILITARY ENCRYPTION." The Hacker was like: "Huh- take a couple of martinis, and call me in the morning." Of course he cracks it overnight. Something struck me in that exchange- Level 5 MILITARY Encryption? The implication was that being MILITARY grade, it would be harder to crack than Level 5 CIVILIAN Encryption. The more I thought about it, the more absurd the idea seemed. Could the Military have access to Classified Proprietary Software Civilians couldn't buy, borrow, or steal? How would that work? Could a programmer suddenly have DELTA FORCE kick his door in, and point guns at him, saying: "We have detected Military-Class Programming on your Computers! Explain where you got it- or you'll get it!!!"? Why should the Military care more about their Secrecy than Civilians, and how should their programming be any different? There're only a fixed number of ways you could square a circle, until it stops making any sense, What would differentiate the Levels of Encryption from one another?
