The sound on my iPhone 4S won't work on videos and music?

Recently the sound bar on my iPhone 4S has disappeared when I'm trying to watch a video or listen to music. Any ideas why and where this has disappeared and doesn't reappear when I press + or - buttons? Sound still works when someone calls or texts me though and the mute button is in the correct posistion. Any ideas please?

Get a Q-tip and put a little alcohol on it, then clean out ur headphone jack port. try cleaning the bottom charge/dock thing too
