-
am currently pregnant, and I am working full time at present as a Legal assistant/Paralegal! my pay is not fantastic I earn £17500 a year. I was wondering when I am on Maternity leave, I will only be recieving around £120.00 - £135.00 per week from my employers for Statutory Maternity Pay, what benefits will I be entitled too, will I be able to claims, child tax credits, housing benefits, council tax beneifts and working tax credits while I am on Maternity leave for 1 year. I know I will recieve child benefit at about £20.00 per week, but I will be a single mother and was wondering what benefits I would be entitled too - any single working mothers please help me as I am concerned I have bills to pay and dont know if I can live off the statutory maternity pay of £540 a month

Answer:
The sensible thing to do is to ask the father of your child to support it. This would be much fairer than asking the Great British Taxpayer to do it and will be far better for your child. Also there is no rule that says you have to take a whole year off. Three months is good but you can manage with less. I took four weeks with my first.

Sorry, I"m in the US. Why don't you go to the websites for the agencies responsible for aid, and read what they have to say; or call and talk to someone?

"entitled too"? Why do you think you should be "entitled" to anything. It is your choice to have a child. If you and the father cannot afford to look after it properly then you should not be breeding. Why expect the state (i.e. other tax payers) to support your lifestyle. How about instead of taking a year off you go back to work as soon as possible and get the father to pay their dues as well.
