How do I become a naturopathic doctor?
-
I'm a bit young, but for a long time now have been interested in naturopathy, chinese medicine, alternative medicine, etc, etc, anything to do with nature and such. I knew I wanted to become a doctor at a young age, but when I discovered there was such a doctor that used herbs and plants instead of conventional medicine to cure the cause, not the symptons, of people... I knew I wanted to be a naturopathic doctor. The thing is, I don't really understand the whole process. I know that many are technically not "accepted" by the medical community, and that you don't make as much as a conventional doctor... but I enjoy this and like to help people the best I can, the way any doctor should, not just for money. What schools can I apply for? Could I somehow become an "apprentice" to a naturopathic doctor? For now, I just read books, like The Complete Herbal Tutor, and others. Thank you so much!

Don't get led astray by this idea that natural equals safe, or that it is somehow better than science based medicine. It's not. The vast majority of alternative medicine doesn't work. That's why its called "alternative". "BETHESDA, Md. -- Ten years ago the government set out to test herbal and other alternative health remedies to find the ones that work. After spending $2.5 billion, the disappointing answer seems to be that almost none of them do. Echinacea for colds. Ginkgo biloba for memory. Glucosamine and chondroitin for arthritis. Black cohosh for menopausal hot flashes. Saw palmetto for prostate problems. Shark cartilage for cancer. All proved no better than dummy pills in big studies funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The lone exception: ginger capsules may help chemotherapy nausea." http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2009/06/the_ap_shoots_and_scores_again.php When proper doctors are able to treat the cause of a condition, they do, but it's not always possible. Other than diet and lifestyle, when alties claim they treat the cause of disease and not the symptoms, they are just making stuff up. When medical science discovers chemicals in nature that can treat disease, they study them and develop medicine that works, can be regulated, controlled, mass produced and with risks and side effects established. This does not happen in alternative medicine where everything is mostly based on traditional use with little or no supporting science. Science based medicine does not talk about mysterious "life force energies", "meridians", "blocked chakras", "subluxations" or other such new age rubbish that simply do not exist. If you really want to help people, look into a career in proper medicine.
