How to calculate cell voltage?

Photovoltaic solar cell maintains a voltage of about 0.5 V.?

  • Under normal operating conditions, and in adequate light, a particular type of photovoltaic solar cell maintains a voltage of about 0.5 V. How many of these would be needed to supply 10 V, and how should they be connected? (b) The active area of each of the above cells is 120 mm by 145 mm. Calculate its output power when it is exposed to a light intensity of 1000 W m−2 and operating with an efficiency of 12%. (c) Describe how a number of these cells could be connected to provide a 10 V supply delivering about 200 W when exposed to the above light intensity.

  • Answer:

you have to connect 20 cells in series so that you will get 10V. You have to check that the mximum current that can be supplied with this 20cell combination, by putting a ammeter and pot in series. The current required for 200W, p=iv, i-20A now divide the 20A by the current you got in previous step. Add thatmuch 20cell combinations in parallel. Enough.

Theoretically you need 20 connected in series to get 10V, I would add another one or two to overcome the serial resistance of so many. The area of the 20 is 0.12x0.145x20=0.348 square meter, therefore from this area you can get 0.348x1000x0.12 = 41.76 watt, to get 200 watt you need 200/41.76=4.79 arrangements, truncated to 5. Bottom line - 21 cells connected in series to form a strip, 5 strips connected in parallel to get the required wattagw

(b) Power out = Intensity * area * efficiency Intensity is 1000 W / m^2 be sure to compute the area of the cell in m^2 efficiency = 12% = 0.12
