What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

Dental abscess, how long do the antibiotics take to work?

  • i have had a tooth abscess since friday, i started myself on some leftover amoxcillin Saturday... i then went to the dentist monday, he gave me a new prescription for amoxcillin and i started those.. so WHY haven't they started to work yet??? i am still in so much pain, i can't stand it.. i'm thinking the other pills i took where a year old, so maybe they weren't potent.. please tell me the new prescription will start to work soon... i'm almost out of pain meds so i don't know how i'll be able to tolerate it after they run out.. the pain is just never ending. my jaw is still swollen.

    antibiotics won't cure a tooth abscess. only extracting the tooth or getting a root canal will. Antibiotics keep the abscess from getting worse, it won't cure it because the source of the infection (bad tooth) is still there.

Usually you should start to feel some relief within 24 hrs. You may need a stronger antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon.

ive had abscesses that have gone after 1 dose of antibiotics but ive also gone over a week before i felt any relief, no matter what you must take the full course and spread your dosage times as equal as you can. ive every sympathy with you, rinse your mouth with salt water, it does give alittle relief also if youve never tried origel, do so, its for toothache or ulcers but it numbs the area were the pain is and i'll be honest i used it till it numbed mine properley i took no notice of the instructions you will feel so much better its around £5 and worth every penny. good luck!
