  • Hello, I am a 16 year old white male. I was wondering about Job Corps and if its for me. From what iv'e seen about it its for troubled teens who get in trouble with the law or have other disorders. I have heard most of the kids there are violent and aggressive. I also hear that the housing conditions and food re terrible. I am worried that this is a Hispanic/black "only" school. I'm not racist but I don't want to be around bunch of people who stereotype/bully because i'm white. Job corps is only an option for me because I am going to get kicked out at 18, not having finished high school yet. I pass all my classes with mostly Cs and Bs. I have only gotten 2 Ds ever and have never failed a class. I am not aggressive and fairly easy to get along with. I'm Well behaved and do not get in trouble. From what I hear Job Corps is not a place of freedom (Trackers, no internet, no off "Campus") I also feel like Job Corps is not a High School Equivalent and may even be less. I am worried about what i will learn (I want to be a computer technician/Engineer) and if it will really help me, or if i'm going to waste part of my life. I want other alternatives but this is all i can think of considering i will have no place to live, no income, no family, and be expected to attend high school and survive some how. So, is Job Corps for me? If not what other alternates do I have? Thank you.

    You get out of it what you put into it. As for the whole violence thing it all depends on what center you go to. There's good centers and bad centers. Job Corps isn't for everyone but it wouldn't hurt to try.

I live in a town where there is a JOb Corp, there is allot of violence and theft , sexual problems. It a mix of mostly blacks and whites. some others mixed in. they do get off campus times but have a curfew if they abide by it. The kids fight among themselves and the town kids or anyone that juswwt looks at some of them wrong. the business in town suffer allot of shoplifting. The tear the parks up and trash the area. they have burned down a gazebo in one of the parks. HOuses and cars in the area get broken into. Vacant buildings get broken into and they have their parties there. Drugs and violence. Allot of it. Frankly as a resident of this town, I wish it would go away. There are kids there that are there to learn something and some of them do good. But you would not believe how many problems the town and the police have with a majority of the kids. Its horrible. I think you would be better off trying to go to a community college and work your way thru. sorry. Thats just my opinion.
