What age is at greater risk of getting breast cancer?

Why does having your first baby after age 30 increase your breast cancer risk? More so than being childless?

  • I had heard this the other day and did some research online about it. According to a risk assessment calculator if I had a baby after age 30 instead of never having one, my lifetime risk would go from 11% to 16%! I always thought that having a baby and breastfeeding would always reduce your risk or at least not increase it. I don't get it because I thought the changes that come with pregnancy and breastfeeding were protective against cancer?

  • Answer:

The studies haven't indicated why this seems to be the case. Additional studies are needed to determine any reasoning. However, the 2002 French study (the largest of its kind) was among the first to show a link between having a first child after age 30 (not 35) and the occurrence of breast cancer. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2002/feb/13/health.medicalscience But then again, another study shows that having a first child after age 30 reduces a woman's risk of getting ovarian cancer! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3895833.stm What's a woman to do? I didn't marry until age 34. I had my daughter at age 37 and my son at age 38. Yes, I knew the risks. Two weeks before my 49th birthday, I was diagnosed with Stage IIIb breast cancer. Is there a link? Probably. But, given my life situation, I didn't really have a choice. Would I change having my children? Absolutely NOT! Our bodies are quite complex and the causes of breast cancer may never truly be known.

I read that it might be because a woman how starts young, or has a lot, has fewer periods over her life. I think that it might also be that when we use our bodies the way they were intended it is healthier for us. Oh, I don't suggest we have babies as teens, or have a bunch, but the breastfeeding example made me think of it. If we use our breasts for their designed purpose they are healthier. That is my opinion! The risk isn't much, so if you wait until after 30 that is fine. Other things will be better for you. Probably less stress over money, since you are apt to be more secure.

I heard that the risk is a tad bit higher if you wait til your over 30 to have your first child. Never heard of having a first child over 30 being higher than that of a woman who never had children at all though.

I think you found some misinformation. I had my son after 30 and my docs told me no such thing. My pregnancy was high risk too, not to mention a family history of breast cancer.
