How does a US citizen marry a UK citizen?

I am a US citizen who wants to marry my fiance who lives in England. I already am aware that I have to get a marriage visa to come over there and marry him but the whole marriage process is a bit confusing. I have been online and read over the requirements but I was hoping someone could maybe explain it a little better for me. Right now we both want to get married but he won't move over to the US until probably January due to work related reasons and that way we can wait for his visa to go through so he can come to the US. So far from what I understand I have to be there with him for 7 days, then on the 8th day I can give notice to marry then I have to wait another 15 days to actually marry him. So, I am a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Have him fly over here for "vacation" and get married. You won't have to wait at all. Then you can deal with immigration as a married couple.
