Which summer job should I choose?

Internship vs Temp Job?

  • I am a rising senior in high school and I have been offered some great positions this summer. I am heavily involved in engineering and computer science. I have been offered an Internship for Siemens that pays $650 and we do a research project they choose that last the whole summer and fall then I got another internship from a college for bio medical that offers $2500 and requires just the summer. Then I got a call on the phone from a person who is offering me a job at Microsoft that will quadruple what i will make at Siemens and double what I will make in bio medical and it is also just for the summer. I really don't know what to choose because of these factors: Siemens: Pros -This company looks good on your resume -The college that is holding it is also college I want to attend - I could possibly get a job with them cons: -It takes up my whole summer and i am a fully working Disc Jokey -It pays very low for the work -The project that we are doing doesn't seem to interesting College Internship Pros -I will be exposed to bio medical which is a demanded field for the world - It looks good on resume -I get payed alot more -My whole summer won't be tied up Cons - Not sure if I would be all that interested in the field - It's kind of far away -Not sure what to expect Microsoft Job Pros: - I get real skills for a real job - I get payed alot more and I get a steady check - It's close to my house - The company is popular Cons: -Not sure if it is good or great on an resume -Not sure if i would keep it because it's a temp job -Microsoft(according to a family member) won't look as good as Siemens or bio medical

  • Answer:

Your last summer was last year ago. There are no summers anymore after you finish high school, only vacations. Unless, that's it, you want to forgo your dreams of Engineering and Computer Science and you decide to become a professional DJ. Didn't you know that? Well, I didn't know that when I was your age, either. Nobody tells you that until it's too late and you need to think about College. Think about your career. Not the money you might make today, but the future that you will build for yourself. $2500 for a high school senior seems quite excessive. I wonder what kind of job will pay that much. A highly demanding you'll most likely despise. A dirty job. Experiments requiring a human guinea pig: you. I wouldn't accept that job unless I was sure about what to expect and I had a genuine interest in the field. Working for Microsoft is a deal with the Devil, yes. Siemens is... well, they won't pay as much but your conscience will be a bit cleaner.

I would always recommend a real job over an internship. Interns in any position spend the first month or two making coffee, filing, copying, faxing, shredding, and collating the work of others. A real job always looks better on a resume, especially when the salary listed is high enough to indicate that you did work that involved more than shuffling paperwork. Furthermore, since Microsoft is close to home, you won't waste time in commuting that will severely limit your DJ opportunities. You will also spend less on gas, a seroius consideration when gas is $4 a gallon. Nothing looks great on a resume unless it's relevant. Depending upon what kind of job you apply for after college, some hiring managers will think Microsoft is much more impressive than Siemans, and vice versa. You may want to do a little research on biomedical, though, just because it sounds like you're not that familiar with what it is. It would be a shame to pass up that opportunity and then later learn that the field fascinates you. Find someone in the field and shadow them for a day.
