What is a good college/university to go to for this career?

Is it possible for someone whos been mentally ill in the past to go down a psychology career?

  • Ive been hospitalized for about 8 months all together but That was about 3 years ago. Im doing very well for myself now thanks to medications :). I was thinking about going into computer work but I have a feeling it wont satisfy me, and I only want to go into it cause its a safe bet. Ive heard and seen MANY messed up people and stories in the past, and I'm kinda used to it. In fact it intrigues me. During my hospitalizations I made the staff, and hopeless patients very happy it was almost like I was an undercover psychologist. I understand psychology doesnt pay very well usually but I can't decide if I should choose a career path I love, or risk choosing a career path I might like but also might hate. I believe my mental illness in the path has driven my passion to choose this career path, but it also may corrupt it. Should I go into psychology or computers. Can someone with a history of mental illness become successful in a field of psychology?

  • Answer:

Most people who work in Psychology chose the field because of their own experience or mental illness in their family. Also look at a lot of the most famous historical characters in Psychology. Many have had serious problems, even psychosis. The point being that illness is used as a stepping stone by great minds like Carl Jung http://beyondmeds.com/2009/09/20/carl-jung/

Think about what career you want to choose as much time as it needs. If you are good at psychology and like it go for it. If not, well you still can search. Go on, take as much time as you need, relative to how much time you have left although.

I am sure it is possible but I think it might be detrimental to listen to psychiatric problems day after day. Maybe something a bit happier would actually be more rewarding. Good Luck!
