Does Royal Mail Special Delivery require a signature?

Does a parcel require a signature for proof of delivery?

Okay, So my parcel which was sent by Home Delivery Network, bought on Amazon. The item got lost the tracking says posted, I contacted amazon and they said that this means the deliver driver put it through letterbox, amazon have refunded me. Putting it through the letterbox is this proof of delivery? I thought the only way for proof of delivery is if there is a signature, is this true?

Unless it was signed for, they have no proof of delivery.
