Random PC crashes when playing games?
-
Hello! Now I have had a few problems with my PC, and it's about a year old. Recently I've had these random PC crashes, or well it doesn't really crash like that it even reboots after a few seconds, and this seems only to happen when playing games. I thought it was my GPU at first so I cleaned it out of dust, there was alot actually, then I put it back in and it didn't crash for a long time, I was like: "Yes! Finally it's over!". But apparently IT WAS NOT. Also the weird thing is that this even happened when I was playing Minecraft! So this has not only happened while playing graphically intensive games. It happened alot when I was playing TERA I remember. I have checked the temps also and my GPU is at approximately 45C IDLE. And when I play games like TERA it's about 50-60C. I also checked my CPU temp, and here is the weird thing... When I look at it by using programs like: HWMonitor and SpeedFan it shows about 60-80C IDLE! But in BIOS right before I start windows it shows only about 25-30C IDLE. I could play games for HOURS, once I played like 9 hours of TERA with no problems at all. So I'm really not sure what could be causing this, I mean if it really was overheating wouldn't it crash just after a few minutes or like 1-2 hours after playing a game? Also here is my PC Specs: Intel Core i5-2500K (Using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 as heatsink.) ATI Gigabyte Radeon 6850 1GB SEAGATE 750GB HDD G. SKILL RIPJAWS 8GB RAM XFX 750W PSU ASUS P8P67 LE I also forgot to mention that I have about 6 fans in my case. And my CPU fan is running in about 750 RPM or something. And it doesn't sound loud at all, so I don't know if it's overheating or not. Please help me someone, i'm so worried about this!

Answer:
Yeah, sounds like an overheating issue. The cooler master should be a decent enough heat sink though. However, 750 RPMs is slow, to say the least. Especially for a processor like the i5.. It should be north of 2000. Make sure the fan's seated right, that its connections are good, and that it has enough thermal gel. It may just be that the fan is dying and needs replaced. Other candidates for random rebooting are driver issues or RAM issues. So, check to make sure all your drivers are the latest available, and if that doesn't work either after checking the heat sink, go ahead and try swapping in some different RAM sticks if you have any lying around.

Well, it probably IS overheating. Don't forget that a PC, like anything mechanical, when working harder generates more heat. I'd recommend spending £30 on a half decent processor fan, well worth the spend even if it doesn't solve the problem.
