How do I fix high hard disk activity?
-
How do I fix this. My hard drive flickers a lot of the time and often when I close applications it stays lit solid for about 10 seconds and I think it might even slow down my games too. It keeps "spiking" up and down (sometimes randomly) and sometimes don't know why. This is annoying as the computer keeps slowing down. On one occasion I opened up procon (performance monitor) and mcsvhost (part of mcaffee) kept popping up. I'm sure my computer didn't used to do this (you had high hard disk activity when you expected it) and was wondering if there was some software which could spread the load out by doing background hard drive activity in one continous flow (a bit at a time) rather than just keep going up and down. I defragmented my computer recently but many of the files could not be defragmented. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Answer:
First you need to get rid of Mcaffee, that anti-virus is junk. Just check this out: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1267950/McAfee-antivirus-program-fault-causes-millions-PCs-shut-down.html I have tried loads of anti-virus programs and I think personally that AVG Internet Security is the best (they also have a free program). Good protection with minimal performance loss. Also check out the AVG PC tune up program on their site and get trial; just Google AVG. Run some anti-virus scans and then download malwarebytes it’s free and run that. Give the computer a restart after all the scans. Also run some disc error checks just to make sure its not errors/bad sectors on hard disc. If the problem is still there check the task manager for any unusual high amounts of CPU activity or any processes that are taking up large amounts of RAM/memory. If you know what program it is from the process name then you found the software or virus that might be causing the issue. If you don't know the name or if it has the same name of another process copy the name down and then terminate the process and if the computer is back to normal Google the process name, and see what comes up and there might be a tutorial of how to delete it. If nothing works then I would format HDD and have a fresh install of windows. But only do that as your very last resort, if you cannot find what is causing the problem and if you do make sure you back-up your data before.
