How do I change my account password on Ubuntu, when it doesn't have a password to start?
-
I want to put a password on my account on a computer I have with Linux, but whenever I try to put the password on the account, it won't let me because I don't have an original password to authenticate it. AKA Since the account doesn't have a password I can't verify a new password..

Answer:
Your user account HAS to have a password. You can't create a user account without a password... well, technically you can but it will remain disabled until you create a password for it. You created a password for the main user account when you installed Ubuntu, it won't allow you to install the operating system without one. What it sounds like you did is set it up to automatically login without a password. That's fine but you won't be able to do any administrative tasks without the password. So either figure out the password or create a new user account and on this one write the password down and store it in a safe place where you can find it if it happens again. Then you can move the data from the old user account to the new one. If that doesn't work you will have to reinstall Ubuntu.

Most Linux uses the root account indirectly with the Sudo command in the terminal. You know the user name, but not the user password. The user password is what you use. I am only guessing that you can boot into Linux. Find the program for users and groups, open this and it should show your account, you should be able to change the password from there. I do not know which Ubuntu you are using. This probably doesn't answer the question because you didn't say how you were trying to do this.
