When is the best time for a recent college grad to start applying for jobs?

  • Hi I just graduated May 12 and I am wondering when is the best time to start applying for jobs? I am relocating to Houston, tx (which is about an 11 to 12 drive from where I am now) and I don't plan to move until July 30th. My current lease wont be up until that time and I really don't want to apply to jobs too early when I know I wont be able to start working until Aug 1. When is the best time to start applying to jobs for someone in my situation. Also, I have BAs in Political Science and Criminal Justice with a minor in legal studies. I am enrolled in a Sociology Master's degree program in Houston for the fall. So the types of jobs I am applying to will be dealing with social, political, and legal issues (if that helps) thanks!

    You should have started applying last January. Now you are competing with all the other grads who could not find jobs. Start sending out resumes now and figure at least a 45 - 60 day hiring process. Given the job situation, if you have to eat a month's rent, you might want to seriously consider this if you get a job offer where they can't wait until Aug. 1.
