When you start singing lessons, do they also teach you how to read music?

does a vocal teacher also teach you to read music or is this something you are expected to learn by yourself? I'm going to be taking singing lessons to train and develop my voice as I'd like to give musical theatre a try (local theatre groups etc) I haven't contacted any one yet and will obviously ask this but I am just wondering.

Answer:
Yes, if you get a vocal teacher that has a degree in vocal pedagogy/vocal performance from a reputable school. If you ask your teacher if she/he can teach you, she/he should be able to help you, it's not difficult (but you will have to practice). Anyone who can play an instrument should be able to show you how to read music. If the teacher is trained classically, she/he should definately know how to read music, and should be able to teach you. Kudos to you for wanting to learn-there are many singers who are content to "get by" and not bother to learn this skill.

Great job in wanting to learn your craft. Yes, a REAL teacher will teach you to read music. Remember, a LOT of "voice teachers" out there are not qualified; American Idol and crap like that has turned vocal music into a wasteland in some respects. If they don't teach you to read, don't waste your time. Also, ask for their credentials.

A voice coach should be concentrating on your Laryngeal Biomechanics. That is why they are called a voice coach. Go to a music tutor to learn your instrument. Go to a dance Instructor to learn movement. Go to a performance coach to put it all together. The days of singing teachers - teaching music, voice and stage presence is long over. We are specialists now. As a voice coach I studied The anatomy of Laryngeal Biomechanics and the Physics of Human sound.and althougn I read and write music I do not teach it....that's for another specialist.

Im pretty sure that they do you have to know what your singing to and match notes with pitches, I don't suspect they will just throw you on stage and expect you to know everything
