How to clean rock climbing shoes?

Can i wear puma shoes for rock climbing?

  • I just had my first rock climbing class today in PE and i made a big mistake by wearing my nike running shoes. Wearing those shoes made it really hard to put my feet securely on grips and it was super slippery! i kept slipping and ended up falling down from the wall... not to mention that the shoes were large and i could barely get my feet on grips. so i was wondering since i have a pair of puma speed cats (pink and black) which i haven't touched in like years, would they be a better choice of shoes to wear for rock climbing? btw our school doesn't have climbing shoes we can all wear. Thanks! any reply would be much appreciated :)

  • Answer:

While the Speed Cats clearly aren't climbing shoes, they do have a relatively smooth, thin sole and fairly good edges. I'd guess that they'd be much better on a climbing wall than your average running shoe with big, thick, chunky soles with crappy edges. Give them a try. I bet you will like them better.

Karen, Your running shoe has a lot of cushion between the bottom of your foot and the sole of the shoe. This cushion absorbs a lot of the force your body is putting on the holds. Since you dont have access to regular climbing shoes, a shoe that has less cushion, is snug/tight, yet is rigid will be your best bet. I once coached a 5yr old whose feet were too small for the gym's smallest shoes. She wore cowgirl boots instead. It was her most successful night. She could edge on next to nothing. I was very surprised. -Good luck

No, you'll also slip badly... Just go barefoot until you can get the proper shoes, or even if you have no interest in getting the shoes I still vote for going barefoot, its good to build up strength.

looking similar to a climbing shoe does not a climbing shoe make, get the right tool for the job. http://www.rei.com/product/746020/mad-rock-phoenix-rock-shoes

They should be fine. The tighter the shoe and harder the edge the better. I would recommend getting some chalk for you hands if you find they slip a lot as well.

wear and try out.
