How long does an allergic reaction to food last?

  • Saturday i ate a strawberry cake donut and about an hour later i started feeling a light itch on both of my arms. That night i work up numerous times scratching myself. The itching has spread to my back, head, and neck. I have been taking the antihistamine xyzal to help with the symptoms. How long do allergic reactions to food usually last? It is about 2 and 1/2 days later and i still have the itching all over... the rashes are not visible but the itchibgitching is strong... I am beginning to question if it was some ingredient in the donut that i was allergic to because i feel like by now the food would be out of my system...

I think you need to talk to your doctor about it. The symptoms you describe don't last in me more than about 1/2 hour and they subside. I use the Claritin type of antihistamine, but then I don't display food allergies, more like dust, grass and other more common allergies. Strawberries are a common allergen and even though the donut was probably artificially flavored, there could have been some real strawberry in it somewhere. In any event, without repeated exposure, the symptoms should have gone down within the same day. Have you used stronger allergy treatments like the epinephrine injection? Seriously, it sounds like it is time to talk to your allergist about this.

I agree, go to your doctor and get it checked out. I have anaphylactic allergies to peanuts, nuts and tomatoes. Last week I had an accidental exposure to the tomatoes, ended up in hospital for 4 days and am still tired, a bit weak and off kilter. It can take up to 72 hours for a food protein to leave your body. When we have a reaction, the mast cells go absolutely crazy. I was given epinephrine for two days, prednisone for 4 and am still on benadryl and ranitidine. (Mind you, I rebounded three times in hospital). See your doc, and take some benadryl. Ranitidine is an antacid, but also works as a histamine blocker quite effectively as it blocks the H2 histamines (benadryl blocks the H1). The bottom line though, is you need to see your doctor, and if you reacted that quickly, your allergy could progress into something far more serious. See an allergist and get a test so you don't have to be stuck going into shock without an epipen. And until you've had an allergy test, do NOT eat anything you haven't prepared yourself. Try to eat 'pure'. Stuff without additives. I hope you feel better soon!

There is no one answer to how long a reaction will last or how severe the reaction will be. Even testing can't tell you that until you have an actual reaction. Each person is different. Allergic reactions can be limited to the incident of exposure, such as those with pollen or animal dander allergies may immediately improve when they are no longer in contact with the allergen. Food and medication allergies typically last longer, since they are ingested.

A dear friend of mine is allergic to strawberries and inadvertently ate a couple baked in a strawberry-rhubarb pie. (She thought it was another kind of pie; she is elderly.) I'm sorry to say her hives came and went for several weeks and she kept muttering, "I never would have eaten that if I had known; strawberries always do this to me." Keep taking the medication; my friend had three courses of it. Oatmeal baths might help a great deal.

You should probably go to a doctor and get this checked out- normally, they don't last over a few hours. However, it is possible that it could be lasting this long. In any case, definitely go have your doctor check it out- it couldn't hurt!
